M2.2 Blog Assignment: Personal Care Products

In reviewing your personal care products:
  • Were you surprised to find out the toxicity rating of your personal care products?
  • Did you decide to change any of your consumer behaviors based on your findings?
  • Should everyone know about this risks and why don’t they?
One of the first products I reviewed was the deodorant that I use. I use Secret outlast in gel. I tend to sweat a lot and regular deodorants do not work for me and I have noticed gel helps control the sweat. I have known Secret brand does have chemicals in their products that are not suitable for human skin but I kind of brushed it off, until now. I was partially surprised because although I knew there were chemicals in Secret products I did not the depth of it. Fragrance is labeled at an 8 which was the highest and 10 other chemicals were at a 1 which is not too bad considering there a few other numbers in between with an overall score of 4. Based on my findings I will be changing my deodorant. I will look for possibly an organic based one that comes in gel to help with my sweat. The second product I looked at was L'Occitane en Provence Hand Cream, Pivoine Flora. This is hands down one of my favorite lotions. I was sad to see it rank so high rank high in fragrance because the fragrance is very inviting! Overall it did rank low in the categories and its total score is a 4. Not too high but a bit concerning  due to the fragrence. I think everyone should know about risks and exposures found in every day products. To become better consumers and know where their money is going.

    Hi Christina,
    It's so interesting that fragrance is one of the most toxic part of these products! It seems like they could just leave the fragrance out and the product would still work just fine and be a lot safer. I had a similar experience with deodorant (I also used to use Secret), and switched to a natural one a couple years ago. I like the brand Native. Granola Goat's undercover cream deodorant is also nice. They only work for 24 hours for me though so I have to wash every day. That's good to hear that the hand cream ranked low except for fragrance.

    Hi Christina - I think all three of us had similar experiences when checking our products. I also checked my deodorant, which is Dove brand, and found that the fragrance portion also seems to be the most dangerous. I think you're right about the fragrances being very inviting, but of course, they're designed that way so consumers buy -- and we do! I wonder if more people knew about the potential dangers of the fragrance, would they continue to buy the products or "brush it off" as you said, because they simply like the smell?

M3.4 Air Pollution

Watching the youtube video, I felt like it introduced me more to air quality. I have some knowledge on it from taking some health class during undergrad, but only understanding the iceberg of it. The 10 minute video summarizes how poor air quality is made up and the effects it has on the human population and the place we call home, planet earth. It was interesting learning about how sulfuric acid is made and how other chemical compounds can wreak havoc when produced. Looking over the air quality index I learned how to read AQI levels on air quality. It connects to the poor air quality we experienced with the fires last October. To learn what numbers indicate what color to use to warn those that the air is good, moderate or poor. M10.2 Blog about MSDS and ToxNet

What are the health risks associated with this chemical? It was hard to find a sole chemical for ZSFG but I came across a compound used here called Metaltite which is used as a dental cement in one of the clinics in building 5 (there are many buildings located in ZSFG but building 5 is where some clinics can be found).  Is the chemical a carcinogen? Under OSHA, this compound is found to be hazardous and a highly flammable liquid and vapor. On the sheet it does not indicate whether it is a carcinogen but searching on the web it was hard to find much information on it. What personal protective equipment or special precautions should be taken when working with this chemical? Those who come in contact with Metaltite should wear protective clothing such as gloves and safety goggles and those who are handling it should not allow this compound to enter drains, sewers or watercourses.
